Lauren Collins, a journalist for The New Yorker and author of the book “They Stole a City,” explained to France 24 how the white supremacist coup that took place in Wilmington, North Carolina, in 1898 was deliberately concealed for years.
She emphasizes that this major event was never mentioned in local schools, including during her own education in her hometown. According to her, both the perpetrators of the coup and the authorities contributed to this concealment.
Currently based in Paris, Lauren Collins shared these revelations in an interview for France 24’s program Perspective, shedding light on a little-known chapter of American history.
