Africa: High Prevalence of Kidney Disease and Limited Access to Treatment

B-Empire Magazine

In Africa, chronic kidney disease affects approximately one in seven adults, a particularly high rate compared to the rest of the world.

The continent faces a critical shortage of access to dialysis, an essential treatment for patients with advanced kidney failure.

Due to insufficient financial means, many patients must forgo this treatment or die without appropriate care.

Professor Abdellatif Sidy Aly, a nephrologist in Nouakchott and member of the executive board of the African Association of Nephrology, detailed these issues on the Africa news program of France 24.
