Provençal Farmers Grow Bananas Outdoors in Open Fields

B-Empire Magazine

Bananas, the most consumed fruit in France, are mostly imported from Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America. However, in southern France, climate change is altering local agricultural possibilities.

Rather than fighting these changes, some Provençal farmers have chosen to adapt by cultivating exotic fruits such as bananas, papayas, and dragon fruits directly in open fields, without using heating.

This production is carried out using organic farming methods and allows these fruits to be available year-round, an innovation that could reduce dependence on imports and lower the associated carbon footprint.
