The El Niño climate phenomenon is currently strengthening in a world already marked by global warming, increasing the risks of droughts, floods, and crop losses in some of the world’s most important agricultural regions, according to a report published Tuesday by the United Nations.
UN experts emphasize that, unlike many natural disasters, El Niño can be anticipated. This predictability offers countries a unique opportunity to protect the upcoming harvest and ensure food security.
They also stress that the coming months are crucial to prepare societies for a more unpredictable climate in the long term by strengthening their adaptive capacity to extreme weather events.
