On October 1, Ethiopian authorities closed their embassy in Asmara and expelled 10 Eritrean diplomats, accusing Eritrea of directly and indirectly supporting an armed offensive launched on September 22 by an anti-government alliance.
In response, Eritrea announced the severance of its diplomatic relations with Addis Ababa, further escalating tensions between the two neighboring countries.
