French Prime Minister Pledges Debt Reduction Despite Student Protests

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu sought to calm student protests and unsettled bond markets during a national address on Thursday, October 7, 2026.

He specified that the Ministry of Education had not experienced any cuts in last week’s budget proposal, while stressing the government’s need to reduce the public deficit to 5%.

Amid growing concerns over French spending and debt, the IMF has urged the country to “put its house in order.”

Additionally, Lecornu confirmed the release of 10 million barrels of diesel to ease energy tensions.
