French Students Protest Structural Problems in the Education System

B-Empire Magazine

A student protest in France, sparked by the absence of teachers and lack of resources at a high school in Créteil, quickly evolved into a broader movement denouncing structural inequalities in the public education system.

According to Gökçe Tuncel, sociologist and postdoctoral researcher at the University Paris-Est Créteil and the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS), this is not an issue that can be resolved with short-term solutions. “It is a structural problem they are denouncing, and their demands call for structural changes,” she explains.

This rapid expansion of the movement reflects more than just the organizational power of social networks: it reveals a growing political awareness among young people, confronted with deteriorating educational infrastructure, unequal access to resources, and an increasingly uncertain future.
