Galileo Generation 2 Features Reconfigurable Signal Module in Orbit

B-Empire Magazine

The second generation of Galileo satellites (G2) incorporates a new signal generation module, described as the “brain” of the satellite, promising unprecedented capabilities in positioning, navigation, and timing.

This module reads precise timing information provided by onboard atomic clocks and generates the signals transmitted to users on Earth. Compared to the first generation, this new module is smarter: it can generate a variety of navigation signals in real time and be reprogrammed once in orbit, offering great flexibility to adapt to evolving user needs while maintaining high performance.

This innovative in-orbit reconfiguration capability will notably enhance signal resistance to interference, accelerate signal acquisition, increase positioning accuracy, and adapt to future needs yet unknown.

Airbus Defence and Space, in collaboration with Thales Alenia Space, is building these satellites in a factory in Germany. The first signal generation module was successfully tested in Toulouse and has returned to Friedrichshafen to be assembled with the radio frequency output module, forming the satellite’s payload. Meanwhile, other components, such as navigation antennas, are undergoing qualification in Europe.

The first full integration of a flying model of this new generation is scheduled for next year, marking a major milestone in the deployment of this enhanced Galileo satellite fleet.
