Donald Trump stated on Saturday, September 19, that an agreement is expected to be signed in the coming days between the United States, the authorities of Greenland, and Copenhagen, guaranteeing Americans “permanent control” over Greenland’s security.
This announcement could end tensions between Washington and European countries, following Trump’s previous attempts to acquire this Danish island.
However, Mikaa Blugeon-Mered, a geopolitical researcher specializing in Greenland at the University of Quebec, qualifies this statement. According to him, the agreement does not change anything in practice, as the United States already had this control, and Trump ultimately abandoned all his initial demands.
