B-Empire Magazine

Freddie Hunt spoke on the official Formula 1 podcast, Beyond The Grid, about the 50th anniversary of his father James Hunt’s world championship, won in 1976 after a thrilling season-long battle with Niki Lauda.

The British driver secured the championship at the final race in Japan, finishing just one point ahead of Lauda. Freddie emphasizes that this era remains one of the greatest in F1 history, characterized by a sport undergoing significant evolution.

He highlights his father’s adaptability, able to overcome mechanical shortcomings, citing notably his victory at the BRDC International Trophy despite a broken gear lever and the 1976 British Grand Prix where his skill tamed an understeering car.

The rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda, popularized by the film Rush, was intense on the track but also marked by genuine friendship. Freddie shares an anecdote where Lauda offered Hunt a plane ride during a test, illustrating their camaraderie despite their differences.
