Migrants in Calais: Ten Years After the ‘Jungle,’ British Hope Endures

B-Empire Magazine

In October 2026, the demolition of the Calais ‘Jungle,’ an emblematic migrant camp, marks its tenth anniversary. This camp, located in northern France, housed thousands of people seeking to cross the English Channel to reach the United Kingdom.

Since its disappearance, the ‘Jungle’ has been replaced by numerous smaller camps, often referred to as ‘jungles,’ scattered along the northern French coast. These camps continue to host migrants driven by the same dream: to reach British shores.

According to France 24 journalists Pauline Godart, Claire Paccalin, and Mohamed Farhat, this situation reflects the persistence of migratory flows and migrants’ aspirations despite police measures and successive dismantlings.
