The President of the Constitutional Council, Richard Ferrand, is facing calls for resignation from deputies of the National Rally (RN) and the Union of Democrats and Independents (UDR), reports RFI on Thursday, October 16.
This reaction follows Richard Ferrand’s public statement that the French Constitution can only be reformed by referendum with the prior approval of Parliament, in accordance with Article 89. This position contradicts that of the RN, which argues that constitutional reform can be initiated by referendum without such approval.
Marine Le Pen, a leading figure of the RN, had already called for Richard Ferrand’s departure following these remarks, considering that they undermine the legitimacy of the referendum process as defended by her party.
