Twenty Years Later, Anna Politkovskaya’s Son Calls for Regime Change to Uncover the Truth

Twenty years ago, Anna Politkovskaya was assassinated in Moscow on the birthday of Vladimir Putin. This investigative journalist for Novaya Gazeta exposed corruption and war crimes in Chechnya and was a vocal critic of the Russian president.

Although the shooter and the organizer of her murder have been convicted, the masterminds remain unknown. In an interview with RFI, her son Ilia Politkovski believes that a genuine investigation into this assassination can only take place if the political regime in Russia changes.

He also reflects on his mother’s personality and convictions, as well as what her career might have been had she still been alive.
