The controversy intensifies as the circuit approaches its major summer events. The rule is neither an individual matter nor a passing controversy. It creates a global procedure, affects players from dozens of nationalities, and aligns professional tennis with the new policy announced by the International Olympic Committee for the female category at the Games.
A Mandatory Test for All WTA Players
The mechanism adopted is based on the search for the SRY gene, typically located on the Y chromosome and involved in male sexual development. According to the policy relayed by the Associated Press, the screening must be conducted only once. It becomes a condition for access to female competitions organized under the authority of the WTA.
The organization claims it wants to preserve the integrity of professional women’s tennis and maintain fair competition conditions. It also promises guarantees of confidentiality and data protection. The screening is set to begin in 2026, alongside an information and support program for players.
Why the SRY Gene is Central to the New Rule
The WTA uses the presence or absence of the SRY gene as a central marker. In the vast majority of cases, this marker corresponds to the expected chromosomal distinction. However, human biology also knows variations in sexual development, mutations, and rare situations that cannot be summarized by a single indicator.
The policy therefore provides for special procedures. A player in whom the SRY gene is detected could still seek to demonstrate complete insensitivity to androgens or another difference in sexual development that prevented the physiological effects of male puberty. This possibility of individual examination itself shows that the raw result does not always suffice to tell the entire biological story of a person.

The timing is not coincidental. The IOC announced in March 2026 a new policy for the protection of the female category in Olympic sports. It limits eligibility and also provides for genetic testing. The same issue could arise for players competing on French territory or subject to French law. The WTA will need to clarify how it reconciles its global regulation with national laws, which are not uniform. What the WTA Must Still Make Transparent
Several answers will be crucial for the credibility of the system. Who performs the sampling? Which laboratories are authorized? How long are the results retained? Who can access them? How does a player contest a decision, and can she continue to play during the appeal? The quality of such a sensitive policy depends less on its slogan than on these concrete guarantees.
Proportionality will also be scrutinized. The organization must demonstrate that the measure addresses a specific sporting need, is based on robust medical knowledge, and that no less intrusive method can achieve the same objective. Without transparency, the promise of fairness risks turning into a crisis of trust between players and their own circuit.
Tennis Opens a Debate That is Just Beginning
The WTA has chosen a rule that is simple to explain but complex to implement. It aims to protect the female category while respecting the dignity, health, and privacy of each player. These objectives are not necessarily incompatible, but their balance will require more than a test: a solid medical protocol, independent appeals, and communication capable of avoiding stigmatization will be necessary.
The outcome of this battle will extend beyond tennis. If the system withstands scientific and legal challenges, it could become a model for other disciplines.
