Sports Illustrated Models Debut Sexy Swimwear for Real Women

Sports Illustrated’s annual swimsuit issue has always been a flashpoint — for beauty standards debates, for cultural conversation, for the magazine industry’s ongoing negotiation with its own history. This year’s edition, however, is making headlines for reasons that feel genuinely new.

The issue features models ranging in age from 19 to 73. Bodies of every shape and size. Women at every stage of life, in every configuration of self. The swimsuits themselves — ranging from barely-there string bikinis to structured one-pieces that manage to be simultaneously modest and deeply sexy — are the best the magazine has ever presented.

« We got tired of the conversation being about whether we should exist. We decided to just make the most beautiful magazine we could, with the most beautiful women we know — which turns out to be all of them. »

— MJ Day, Editor, SI Swimsuit

The response has been overwhelming and largely positive. Not universal — it never is — but the volume of readers writing in to say « I finally saw someone who looks like me » speaks to something the magazine industry has been slow to understand: representation is not a concession. It’s a growth strategy. It’s also, simply, the right thing to do.
