Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn, born on December 11, 1918, in Kislovodsk, Russia, was a Russian writer and dissident. He is best known for his works criticizing the Soviet regime, particularly 'The Gulag Archipelago'. In 1970, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for the ethical force with which he has pursued the indispensable traditions of Russian literature. Solzhenitsyn passed away on August 3, 2008.
