He is best known for his efforts in promoting peace and for his commitment to exposing the causes of international conflicts. In 1911, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to expose and fight what he considers to be the main cause of war, namely, the anarchy in international relations. Fried was also one of the founders of the International Peace League.
