Baruch S. Blumberg, born on July 28, 1925, in New York, was an American physician and researcher. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1976 for his discoveries concerning new mechanisms for the origin and dissemination of infectious diseases. Blumberg also contributed to research on hepatitis B and developed a vaccine for this disease. He passed away on April 5, 2011.
