Carl E. Wieman, born on March 26, 1951, in Corvallis, Oregon, is an American physicist known for his contributions to quantum physics. In 2001, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute gases of alkali atoms, as well as for his early fundamental studies of the properties of the condensates. His research has opened new avenues in the field of atomic and molecular physics. Wieman is also engaged in science education and the promotion of science teaching.
