He is best known for his work on immunity, which laid the foundations of modern microbiology. In 1908, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his significant contributions to this field. Mechnikov was also a pioneer in the study of phagocytes, essential cells in the immune defense. He passed away on July 15, 1916.
