The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) is a non-governmental organization advocating for the elimination of nuclear weapons. Founded in 2007, it has played a key role in raising awareness of the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of these weapons. ICAN has also been at the forefront of efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of nuclear weapons. In 2017, it was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons.
