Joseph Erlanger, born on January 5, 1874, in San Francisco, California, was an American physiologist known for his significant contributions to the understanding of nerve fiber functions. In 1944, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their discoveries relating to the highly differentiated functions of single nerve fibers. Erlanger collaborated with Herbert Gasser, with whom he conducted fundamental research on nerve physiology. He passed away on December 5, 1965.
