Joseph Rotblat, born on November 4, 1908, in Warsaw, Russian Empire, was a Polish physicist and pacifist. He emigrated to the United Kingdom before World War II and played a key role in the development of nuclear physics. However, he soon took a stand against the use of nuclear weapons. In 1995, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to diminish the part played by nuclear arms in international politics and, in the longer run, to eliminate such arms. Rotblat passed away on August 31, 2005.
