Julian Schwinger, born on February 12, 1918, in New York, was an American theoretical physicist known for his fundamental contributions to particle physics. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965 for his work in quantum electrodynamics, which had deep-ploughing consequences for the understanding of elementary particles. Schwinger was also an influential professor and contributed to many areas of theoretical physics until his death on July 16, 1994.
