Nicholas Murray Butler, born on April 2, 1862, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, was an American educator and diplomat. He served as president of Columbia University and played a key role in promoting global peace. In 1931, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his assiduous efforts to revive the ideal of peace and to rekindle the spirit of peace in his nation and in all of mankind. Butler passed away on December 7, 1947.
