Pablo Neruda, born on July 12, 1904, in Parral, Chile, was a Chilean poet and diplomat, recognized as one of the major figures in 20th-century literature. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1971 for his poetry that, with the action of an elemental force, brings alive a continent's destiny and dreams. Neruda was also a passionate advocate for human rights and an active member of the Chilean Communist Party. He passed away on September 23, 1973.
