Peter W. Higgs, born on May 29, 1929, in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom, was a British theoretical physicist known for his fundamental contributions to particle physics. In 2013, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his theoretical discovery of a mechanism that helps to understand the origin of mass of subatomic particles. This discovery was confirmed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Higgs passed away on April 8, 2024.
