Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, born on October 24, 1932, in Paris, was a French physicist known for his contributions to materials science. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1991 for his work on order phenomena in simple systems, which were generalized to more complex forms of matter, particularly liquid crystals and polymers. De Gennes was also a pioneer in the study of phase transitions and material properties. He passed away on May 18, 2007.
