He is best known for his discovery of fullerenes, a class of carbon molecules. In 1996, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this discovery, which he shared with other researchers. Smalley was also a pioneer in the field of nanotechnology before his death on October 28, 2005.
