Roald Hoffmann, born on July 18, 1937, in Zloczov, Poland, is an American chemist of Polish origin. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1981 for his theories, developed independently, concerning the course of chemical reactions. Hoffmann has also contributed to the understanding of chemical mechanisms and has been a pioneer in the use of theoretical chemistry.
