Zhores I. Alferov, born on March 15, 1930, in Vitebsk, Belarus, was a Russian physicist known for his contributions to semiconductor science. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2000 for developing semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed and optoelectronics. Alferov was also a strong advocate for science and education in Russia. He passed away on March 1, 2019.
