The World Changes Its Map: Africa Finally Reclaims Its True Scale

The world has not changed size, but the way it is seen has just shifted. On Friday, September 4, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed a resolution calling for wider use of maps that respect the true area of continents, particularly the Equal Earth projection. The measure, spearheaded by Togo and supported by the African Union, passed by 164 votes to one, with the United States opposing it and six countries abstaining.

The decision may sound technical, yet its effect is striking. On the familiar Mercator map still found in classrooms, media graphics and digital displays, Africa can appear roughly the same size as Greenland. In reality, Africa is about fourteen times larger. Equal Earth does not make Africa bigger. It corrects a visual illusion that has shaped minds for more than four centuries.

A historic vote reshapes the global imagination

The resolution, titled “Correct the Map,” encourages equal-area projections wherever comparing the size of regions matters. It points toward public institutions, international organisations, schools and media. The text does not outlaw Mercator and is not a binding global law. Its significance lies in establishing a powerful standard at the institution representing almost every country on Earth.

Supporters describe the reform as cognitive justice. A map that repeatedly enlarges some regions while pushing others to the margins can influence how generations imagine power, distance and importance. Correcting the map is therefore also about correcting a deeply rooted story of which places occupy the centre of the world.

Why Mercator distorts Africa so dramatically

Gerardus Mercator designed his famous projection in 1569 to help navigation. Its major advantage is that it preserves local angles and directions, allowing sailors to plot compass routes more easily. Yet converting a sphere into a rectangle inevitably creates distortion, and on Mercator that distortion grows sharply toward the poles.

Greenland, Canada, Russia, Europe and the United States consequently look much larger relative to territories near the equator. Africa, Latin America, South Asia and Southeast Asia are visually diminished. A tool designed for navigation became, through repetition, a general portrait of the world it was never meant to represent accurately.

Equal Earth does not claim to be perfect

Created in 2018 by cartographers Bojan Šavrič, Tom Patterson and Bernhard Jenny, Equal Earth is an equal-area projection. It preserves proportional surface area: if one region is twice as large as another on the globe, it remains twice as large on the map. Its designers also pursued a graceful, readable shape that feels familiar to anyone who has looked at a globe.

No flat map can preserve area, shape, distance and direction at the same time. Equal Earth stretches some outlines and cannot replace specialised navigational charts. Its strength appears when an atlas, broadcaster or government wants to compare continents and needs a much more truthful visual hierarchy.

France gives the movement European momentum

France added a major European dimension by announcing on the day of the vote that its official depictions of the world would move away from Mercator toward a more balanced projection. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot argued that the old map gave the United States, Russia and China disproportionate visual prominence compared with Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia.

The French decision matters because it turns international symbolism into a practical commitment. Maps used or produced by government departments, cultural institutions and educational tools can now evolve. The central question is implementation: which ministries, schools, publishers and platforms will actually follow?

An African diplomatic victory built from Lomé

The UN vote crowns a diplomatic campaign led by African states, with Togo at the forefront. The African Union had already backed the initiative, alongside organisations seeking to end the continent’s peripheral representation. Lomé now plans to persuade governments, schools, international bodies and technology companies to adopt the new reference.

The argument reaches beyond imagery. Africa’s true area helps explain its distances, infrastructure needs, resources and market diversity. The continent covers more than 30 million square kilometres and can contain the United States, China, India, Japan and much of Europe combined. Seeing that scale correctly solves no crisis, but it allows debates to begin from a less misleading foundation.

Schools and technology platforms hold the next move

The real test will take place on screens. Digital map services often rely on Web Mercator because it works efficiently for tiled maps, zooming and consistent navigation. The UN vote does not mean every application must abandon that system for every task. It invites a smarter distinction: one projection for navigation and another for representing and comparing the planet.

Textbook publishers, newsrooms, museums and global platforms now have a clear political signal. Adding Equal Earth to general maps, explaining why projections differ and placing a globe beside a flat map would already mark a profound change. Geographic literacy should not mean memorising one image; it should mean understanding what every image preserves and sacrifices.

The signal the world can no longer ignore

The American opposition and six abstentions show that even geometry can become geopolitical. Still, the balance is unmistakable: an overwhelming majority of states accepted that a world map is never neutral. After centuries in which Mercator organised the collective imagination, Equal Earth offers a correction visible at first glance.

The new map does not create a larger Africa. It reveals the Africa that has always existed. If schools, institutions and screens follow the momentum from New York, hundreds of millions of people may soon encounter a world whose proportions tell a different story. This is not merely a cartographers’ debate. It is a new way of distributing space, and therefore attention.
