Sepang Hosts 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix, First Time Since 2017

The 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix will take place from October 2-4 at Malaysia's Sepang International Circuit, marking Formula 1's return to the track since 2017. Known for fast corners and unpredictable weather, Sepang presents significant technical challenges, especially in thermal and braking management. Only ten current drivers have raced here before, promising a quick adaptation for most.

Formula 1 will stop in Sepang, Malaysia, for the 16th round of the 2026 championship, the Bahrain Grand Prix, held from October 2 to 4. This will be the first race at this circuit since 2017, after Malaysia replaced the original Bahrain Grand Prix date in April.

The Sepang International Circuit, inaugurated in 1999 and designed by Hermann Tilke, is known for its fast and flowing layout, featuring a high-speed central sector and technical braking zones, notably at turns 11 and 14. According to former driver Jolyon Palmer, the circuit offers many overtaking opportunities, especially at the final corner.

Sepang’s tropical climate, characterized by high humidity, intense heat, and sudden showers, adds an extra layer of difficulty for drivers and teams. The abrasive surface, comparable to Bahrain’s, requires rigorous thermal management of tires and brakes.

Since 2017, the circuit has undergone several resurfacing works, particularly between turns 6 and 12, as well as recent leveling aimed at improving asphalt quality while preserving the original characteristics.

Among the current grid, only ten drivers have previously raced at Sepang, which should encourage a rapid learning curve for the majority of competitors during this long-awaited return.
