Audi, making its debut in Formula 1 with an all-new power unit, is working closely with BP, its technology partner, to develop the advanced sustainable fuels mandated by the FIA for 2026.
These so-called “drop-in” fuels are designed to replace fossil fuels without requiring engine adjustments and are produced from sources such as carbon capture, municipal waste, and non-food biomass.
BP has evaluated 70 fuel components, developed 400 pilot samples, and tested 200 blends, while supplying 240,000 liters of test fuel to Audi at its Neuburg facility.
Luc Jolly, head of motorsport technology fluids at BP, highlights the dual challenge: Audi is a new team with a new engine, and they must design a FIA-approved sustainable fuel without the fossil components typically used in F1.
Finding the optimal balance between performance and reliability within this new regulatory framework is complex but represents an exciting technical challenge for the BP and Audi team.
