COSI Telescope Assembled to Study the Milky Way and Beyond

The gamma-ray telescope COSI has been successfully assembled by engineers at the University of California, Berkeley. This wide-field observatory will study energetic phenomena in the Milky Way, including the creation and destruction of matter and antimatter, as well as the final stages of stellar life. The mission is a collaboration among several US institutions and the Italian Space Agency.

The gamma-ray telescope COSI (Compton Spectrometer and Imager) has been successfully assembled, as shown in an image taken on July 8, 2026, by the University of California, Berkeley.

COSI is a wide-field instrument designed to study energetic phenomena in the Milky Way and beyond, notably the creation and destruction of matter and antimatter as well as the final phases of stellar life.

The mission is a collaboration among several institutions: the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley; the University of California, San Diego; the Naval Research Laboratory; NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center; Northrop Grumman; the Space Dynamics Laboratory; the Italian Space Agency; and other research centers.
