Gravitational Lensing Effect Visible in James Webb Image of Galaxy Group MACS J0454.1-0300

The James Webb Space Telescope revealed an image of galaxy group MACS J0454.1-0300 where light from distant galaxies is distorted and magnified by gravitational lensing caused by the group's mass.

The NASA James Webb Space Telescope captured a spectacular image of the galaxy group MACS J0454.1-0300, released on September 29, 2026.

In this image, the bright golden galaxies are members of the MACS J0454.1-0300 group. In contrast, the clustered orange galaxies on one side are not part of this group but are much more distant galaxies.

The light from these distant galaxies is distorted and magnified by a phenomenon called gravitational lensing. This occurs when the enormous mass of a foreground object—in this case, the galaxy group—bends and amplifies the light coming from background objects.

This image thus illustrates an effect comparable to a cosmic “hall of mirrors,” where distant galaxies appear distorted and multiplied.
