Mauritius’ Foreign Minister Ritish Ramful called on France on Saturday, September 26, 2026, to resume discussions regarding the sovereignty of Tromelin Island, a small island in the Indian Ocean administered by Paris but claimed by Mauritius.

During a statement at the United Nations, he reaffirmed that Mauritian sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago is “non-negotiable” and also addressed this second territorial dispute with France.

The Tromelin issue has been stalled for several years, notably after France abandoned a proposed co-management agreement for the island, which halted progress on the matter.
