Netflix is not closing the door on the Upside Down: the platform has just officially announced Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, a live-action prequel that will take the beloved universe back to 1955. Set to premiere in 2028, the series will abandon the 1980s and the historical heroes of Hawkins to introduce new characters, new dangers, and a new mystery in Nevada. This announcement is designed to awaken a global community and transform the conclusion of Stranger Things into the beginning of a much larger franchise.

Netflix unveiled the project on November 6, the traditional Stranger Things Day, which commemorates the fictional disappearance of Will Byers in 1983. According to the official presentation published on Tudum, Other Worlds will take place in the 1950s, before the original series and also prior to the play Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Variety specifies that the action will be set in 1955 in Marion, Nevada, with filming taking place in New Mexico.

An Announcement That Changes the Future of Stranger Things

The main series concluded at the end of 2025 after accompanying a generation of viewers for nearly a decade. Netflix could have opted to extend the nostalgia with merchandise or familiar appearances. The announced choice is riskier: to build a standalone story, in a different era and around an entirely new set of characters, while retaining the mystery, horror, and adventure codes that made the brand a global success.

This strategy helps protect the conclusion given to Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and the other residents of Hawkins. It also avoids turning every survivor into an artificial bridge to a sequel. The Duffer Brothers promise a new setting, new heroes, and new antagonists. Netflix presents an adventure imbued with the heart, spectacle, and mystery of the original series. The promise is clear: to recapture a familiar sensation without replaying the exact same story.

Why 1955 and Nevada Are Decisive Choices

Shifting the narrative to 1955 immediately alters its imagery. Bicycles, shopping malls, and 1980s cassettes give way to post-war America, the dawn of space exploration, nuclear fears, and military secrets. Nevada naturally evokes atomic testing, forbidden zones, and the mythology of extraterrestrial phenomena. While not revealing the plot, this setting thus provides an ideal ground to extend the obsessions of Stranger Things: clandestine experiments, parallel realities, and institutions that conceal the impossible.

Variety indicates that the teaser specifically situates the series in Marion, Nevada. The new narrative is expected to explore events preceding young Henry Creel’s exposure to the mysterious substance linked to his powers. This connection maintains a thread with the known mythology without forcing the production to resurrect the plots of Hawkins. It may also shed light on the origin of a phenomenon that the main series and the play have approached from different angles.

Kate Trefry and Joe Wright at the Helm

The project is not entrusted to a team foreign to the saga. Kate Trefry, a long-time writer for Stranger Things and author of The First Shadow, will serve as co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer. Matt and Ross Duffer remain co-creators and executive producers. This continuity is intended to ensure that the new revelations respect the established rules, even as the narrative radically changes its environment.

Joe Wright will direct the first three episodes and will also participate in executive production. The filmmaker known for Pride and Prejudice, Atonement, and Darkest Hour is recognized for his sense of staging, ambitious camera movements, and ability to give a strong visual identity to an era. His involvement suggests that Netflix aims to distinguish Other Worlds from mere retro imitation and give the launch a cinematic signature.

A Franchise Bet for Netflix

Other Worlds becomes the fourth major project in the universe, following the parent series, the animated production Tales from ’85, and the play The First Shadow. This multiplication reveals a broader ambition: to make Stranger Things a property capable of living across multiple formats, decades, and locations. For Netflix, the stakes are strategic. Platforms need recognizable global events, but they must also avoid the weariness that occurs when a brand repeats the same faces and conflicts for too long.

However, the timeline suggests a desire not to rush production. A release in 2028 allows time for casting, writing, sets, and visual effects. It also creates a long enough wait for the series to appear as a new event rather than an automatic extension. The announced filming in New Mexico will also provide the team with landscapes compatible with the American West and the isolated atmosphere suggested by 1950s Nevada.

What Netflix Has Yet to Reveal

The casting has not yet been announced, and the number of episodes remains unknown. Netflix has also not communicated a specific date beyond 2028. Details about the creatures, the institutions involved, and the level of connection with Vecna remain secret. This caution is logical: the announcement must establish the universe without reducing two years of waiting to a list of already consumed revelations.

The central question will be one of balance. If the series strays too far from Hawkins, it will need to prove that the name Stranger Things corresponds to a coherent universe and not just a beloved group of characters. Conversely, if it multiplies references, it risks turning every mystery into an explanation and diminishing the power of the unknown. However, the choice of a different era, a different state, and a new cast gives the project a real chance to escape these two traps.

The Signal That Fans Cannot Ignore

With Other Worlds, Netflix primarily confirms that Stranger Things will no longer be just a concluded series, but a sustainable narrative world. The 2028 event aims to attract historical fans while opening a door to viewers who did not grow up with Hawkins. Success is not guaranteed, but the creative team, the leap to 1955, and the Nevada setting give this relaunch an immediate identity. The end of an era has just become the starting point for another.
