Two weeks before the vote on extending the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), the Polisario Front has publicly expressed its criticisms of the UN Special Envoy, Staffan de Mistura.

In a statement released on Tuesday, October 13, the Sahrawi independence movement highlighted deep disagreements with the approach employed by the UN personal envoy on the ground. This stance comes after the latest closed-door meetings of the UN Security Council, which are discussing the future of the MINURSO mission.

The upcoming vote will determine whether MINURSO’s mandate is extended, a key decision for organizing a self-determination referendum in Western Sahara, a region disputed between Morocco and the Polisario Front.
