On Monday, October 19, 2026, more than 220 people were killed in drone strikes in the administrative area of Abyei, located on the border between Sudan and South Sudan, reports RFI.

These strikes are attributed to the forces of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the Sudanese army. The objective of this attack is reportedly to deprive the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), paramilitaries at war with the army for more than three years, of a strategic transit and supply area.

Abyei is a disputed region whose sovereignty is claimed by both Sudan and South Sudan, further complicating the local security situation.
