On September 30, Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote laid the foundation stone for his upcoming refinery in Lamu, Kenya, an ambitious project targeting a production capacity of 700,000 barrels per day.
According to Dangote, this initiative is essential for the majority of African countries to become fuel self-sufficient by 2030. He emphasizes that self-sufficiency necessarily requires local refining.
This promise raises questions regarding its feasibility, particularly due to the technical, financial, and logistical challenges associated with constructing and operating such large-scale infrastructure in Africa.
