Ethiopia on Thursday, October 1, accused neighboring Eritrea of acts of hostility and belligerence, closing its embassy in Asmara and ordering ten Eritrean diplomats to leave the country, according to France 24.

In response, Eritrea announced the severance of its diplomatic relations with Ethiopia, marking an escalation of tensions between the two countries.

These events come amid a conflict in northern Ethiopia between the Ethiopian army and anti-government groups. Several explosions of unknown origin were heard overnight from Wednesday to Thursday in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
