After a weekend marked by riots and looting linked to nationwide anti-government protests, the central French government has asked certain local authorities to impose curfews, France 24 reported on October 19, 2026.

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu indicated that he does not rule out the possibility of declaring a state of emergency but considers it more appropriate for now to apply partial and localized curfews. However, he did not specify which cities would be affected by these measures.

This decision comes amid increasing pressure on the government regarding security failures, as the anti-government protests have escalated into violence in several areas across the country.
