This is no longer merely an artificial intelligence system that answers questions. It is designed to enter software, make a sequence of decisions and deliver finished work. With GPT-6 Astra, unveiled on September 3, 2026, OpenAI is claiming its most capable model yet and a major advance in coding, research, computer use and complex professional tasks. One other fact dominates the launch: Astra is the first OpenAI model to reach the Critical cybersecurity capability level under the company’s own Preparedness Framework.

That tension makes the announcement bigger than the usual contest between AI laboratories. Astra carries a vast economic promise: agents that can execute an entire work chain. It also carries an equally large political question. How can people retain meaningful control when a system can act, test, correct itself and continue with limited guidance?

A model designed to act, not merely advise

OpenAI describes Astra as a model trained to work directly in professional environments. It can produce documents, presentations and spreadsheets while following established templates, operate software and conduct multistep processes. In game development, Playco says it cut manual fixes by 50 percent on prototypes created with Astra. That figure was published by OpenAI and will need confirmation across more independent settings.

The essential change is not one spectacular answer but continuity of action. Earlier systems were strongest at proposing a method, writing a piece of code or summarizing a file. A more autonomous agent can open tools, compare results, identify an error and continue toward delivery. For businesses, that could move the center of value: AI becomes an execution layer between employees and their applications rather than only a copilot.

The AGI promise meets the burden of proof

OpenAI president Greg Brockman framed the launch as a possible beginning of the artificial general intelligence era. It is a powerful phrase, but not a scientific certification. There is no universal definition of AGI and no authority empowered to validate it. OpenAI’s reported scores suggest progress in reasoning, science, computer use and cybersecurity. They do not prove that one system has general intelligence equal to a human in every situation.

Reuters notes that real-world performance remains to be tested while the industry faces growing concern about agent safety. The responsible reading is neither to dismiss the announced advance nor to repeat AGI as an established fact. Astra is presented as a far more capable actor. The size of the leap, its reliability and operational cost must now be measured by users, researchers and independent evaluators.

Why the Critical cyber rating changes the debate

In its safety overview, OpenAI says Astra can, with appropriate tools and access, find previously unknown security flaws and develop new ways to exploit well-protected systems without a human directing every step. That ability could help defenders discover vulnerabilities before attackers. It could also lower the cost of offensive operations if safeguards fail or sensitive access is configured poorly.

The company says it strengthened system isolation, checkpoint encryption, full-trajectory monitoring and blocking evaluations before internal use. OpenAI also reports that Astra rejects more dangerous cyber requests than its predecessor. Those measures matter, but they put the developer in a difficult position: it supplies the technology, its initial assessment and much of the safety narrative.

The focus will therefore shift to external audits, action logs, access limits and responsibility after an incident. A company giving an agent access to source code, customer data or infrastructure cannot rely on a demonstration alone. It must know what the agent did, under which permissions, and how to stop it immediately.

What French and European businesses should understand

For France and Europe, Astra arrives as compliance, data sovereignty and technological dependence move into the boardroom. The potential gains are concrete: faster document analysis, file preparation, automated software tests and support for scientific teams. Adoption should nevertheless begin with reversible environments and controlled data rather than broad access to an entire information system.

Organizations must distinguish four levels: what an agent can read, what it can change, what it can send outside and what it can trigger without approval. This may sound technical, but it is a governance decision. In financial, legal, medical or industrial processes, a silent error may cost far more than a task that was never automated.

The rollout itself is gradual. Official ChatGPT release notes say Astra is starting with a limited set of organizations, with broader availability planned later. That creates a valuable observation period. Early reports can compare announced capability with conditions in the field, including French-language work and regulated European environments.

Work will not vanish overnight, but its boundary is moving

The most immediate scenario is not the total replacement of employees. It is a rapid redistribution of tasks. Professionals who can define goals, control sources, set permissions and verify deliveries may multiply their capacity. Roles based on repeatable digital sequences will face greater pressure on deadlines and price.

The transition could also widen the gap between companies. Large groups can pay for audits, isolated environments and security teams. Smaller organizations may adopt agents to remain competitive without equivalent safeguards. The advantage will not come only from access to the best model, but from the quality of the organization surrounding it.

The signal no one can ignore

GPT-6 Astra does not settle the AGI debate. It makes that debate practical. When AI can act inside work tools, the question is no longer only what it can answer. The question becomes what people are prepared to let it do. Security, permissions and proof of action now become products as important as model intelligence.

The world is entering a phase in which adoption speed alone will not be enough. The likely winners will combine ambition with control: test quickly, measure honestly, restrict access and preserve a clear stop mechanism. Astra may be a major technological leap. Its true importance will depend on whether institutions and companies can prevent promised autonomy from becoming imposed autonomy.
