In Mauritania, civil society is mobilizing for the implementation of the so-called Karama law, legislation aimed at protecting women against sexual violence and crimes.
This law was examined by the Council of Ministers several years ago but has never been adopted by the National Assembly.
Discussions within Parliament are stalled over certain provisions of the law, particularly their conformity with Sharia, which is hindering its adoption.
The current mobilization by civil society aims to pressure for the law to finally be passed and implemented, in order to strengthen the protection of women in Mauritania.
