More than five months after the start of the Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which has already caused over 9,000 cases and 4,300 deaths, no vaccine has yet been approved against this virus.

Two candidate vaccines, developed by Oxford and Moderna, are currently in clinical trial phases, providing reasons to hope for future protection, reports RFI on Thursday.

Additionally, another research avenue is evaluating whether a vaccine already used against Ebola Zaire could offer protection against the Bundibugyo virus.

Beyond scientific advances, the trust of local populations will be decisive for the success of vaccination efforts, emphasizes Emanuele Capobianco, Director of Global Health Security at Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
