The Rwanda will host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in the “2030s,” marking the first event of its kind in Africa since 1993, Formula 1 announced Tuesday, according to France 24.

A decade-long agreement has been signed between Formula 1 and the East African country, which has been seeking to organize an F1 race for several years. Rwanda already uses sports, including football and basketball, to enhance its image and attract investment.

However, the announcement has drawn criticism: Amnesty International accuses Formula 1 of awarding Rwanda a “sportswashing prize,” denouncing the use of sport to obscure human rights issues.
