Solar Eclipse of August 12, 2026: Europe Prepares for a Historic Evening

On August 12, 2026, the shadow of the Moon will cross the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and Spain. In France, the Sun will be obscured by up to 99.5% depending on the city: here’s what you need to know to experience this exceptional event safely.

The European sky is set to offer a scene that millions will never forget. On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse will sweep across the northern part of the planet, plunging parts of Iceland, Spain, and Portugal into darkness. In mainland France, the phenomenon will remain partial but spectacular: in the Southwest, more than 99% of the solar disk will disappear behind the Moon.

With just ten days to go before the event, preparations are ramping up. Space agencies, astronomers, local authorities, and tourism professionals are gearing up for a significant scientific moment, a global collective experience, and a logistical challenge. The phenomenon will occur in the evening, with the Sun very low on the western horizon: the choice of location and safety regulations will therefore be crucial.

An 8,260-Kilometer Shadow Cast Across the World

According to NASA, the path of totality will begin in the Arctic regions, crossing northern Russia, Greenland, Iceland, and the Atlantic, before reaching Spain and a small area of northeastern Portugal. The central shadow of the Moon will travel approximately 8,260 kilometers in an hour and a half. The maximum totality will last two minutes and eighteen seconds off the coast of Iceland.

In Spain, the Sun will be completely obscured just before sunset. The path will enter through Galicia and Asturias, crossing regions such as León, Burgos, Soria, and Zaragoza, before reaching the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands. The duration of totality there will often be close to one minute, but the visual effect promises to be striking: a sudden twilight in the midst of a summer evening.

The spectacle will extend far beyond this narrow band. The partial eclipse will be visible in much of Canada, northern United States, Europe, and northwestern Africa. The Associated Press highlights that it will coincide with the peak of the Perseids and a configuration of six planets visible before dawn, turning August 12 into an exceptional day for sky enthusiasts.

In France, a Near-Totality at Sunset

France will not be in the path of totality, but the level of obscuration will be remarkable. The CNES announces a phenomenon visible across the mainland between approximately 7:10 PM and 9:20 PM, depending on the regions. The maximum will occur around 8:15 PM to 8:26 PM, while the Sun will already be very low.

The report coordinated by the French Astronomy Association anticipates an obscuration of 92.2% in Paris, 93.8% in Lyon, 96% in Nantes and Montpellier, 97.6% in Bordeaux, 97.8% in Toulouse, and up to 99.5% in Biarritz. In Marseille, 96.3% of the solar disk is expected to be hidden. Strasbourg, further from the central band, would still reach 89.9%.

The Western Horizon Will Be as Important as the Weather

These figures do not guarantee good observation conditions. In several cities, the end of the phenomenon will coincide with sunset. A building, a hill, trees, or a low cloud layer could be enough to obscure the final phases. Observers will need to find a site with a perfectly clear view to the west, avoiding settling on a road, a dangerous shoulder, or private property.

The Atlantic coast and the Southwest will offer the strongest obscurations in France, but actual weather conditions will only be reliable as the event approaches. The best approach will be to keep several potential locations in mind and avoid last-minute improvised moves to already saturated areas.

Spain Faces an Unprecedented Tourism Challenge

The eclipse also represents a massive economic opportunity. Le Monde reported an estimate of 17 million visitors expected in the affected areas of Spain, including five million from abroad. Rooms have been booked several years in advance, and rural areas of Castile and León, Aragon, or Navarre hope to benefit from this influx.

However, the tourism promise comes with risks: traffic jams, illegal parking, pressure on emergency services, wildfires during the dry season, and saturation of mobile networks. Spain has been coordinating the efforts of thirteen ministries and regions since 2025. A full-scale rehearsal was even organized in the spring to test the sites and ensure that the terrain would not block the Sun.

Iceland faces a different equation. The totality there will be longer, but the weather is more uncertain and infrastructure is limited in some western areas. The national tourism office has published recommendations for professionals, proving that astronomy is becoming a significant driver of global travel.

A Large-Scale Scientific Experience

A total eclipse allows for the observation of the solar corona, the Sun’s outer atmosphere usually drowned in its light. The European Space Agency will broadcast the phenomenon live from the astrophysical observatory of Javalambre in Spain and will organize public activities in León. Its Solar Orbiter and Proba-3 missions will contribute to the observational effort surrounding the event.

More than sixty research balloons are also set to be launched from Spain and Iceland with support from NASA. Teams will measure temperature variations and atmospheric reactions to the rapid passage of the shadow. A NASA scientific aircraft will chase the eclipse at high altitude to extend the observation window and photograph the corona in several wavelengths.

The Absolute Rule: Never Look Without Protection

In France, the eclipse will be partial everywhere. Therefore, you must never look directly at the Sun, even if it seems almost entirely covered. The CNES recommends using only ISO 12312-2 certified glasses, intact and from a reliable supplier. Sunglasses, photographic film, X-rays, smoked glass, or a phone screen do not protect the retina.

Binos, cameras, and telescopes require a suitable solar filter placed in front of the lens. Looking through an unprotected instrument concentrates the radiation and can cause irreversible damage in seconds. For families, indirect observation using a pinhole projector to cast the image of the Sun onto a clear surface is a simple alternative.

A European Event That Opens a Spectacular Cycle

This evening will hold special significance for a generation that did not experience the total eclipse of 1999 in France. The French Astronomy Association reminds us that the same location is crossed by totality only about once every four centuries on average. In Paris, the next total eclipse is not expected until 2081.

August 12, 2026, will also kick off a rare series. A much longer total eclipse will cross southern Spain, North Africa, and part of the Middle East on August 2, 2027. An annular eclipse will follow in January 2028. For Europe and the Mediterranean, the sky thus becomes a global cultural, scientific, and tourism event. The first step will take place in ten days, at the edge of the horizon, for a few minutes capable of uniting an entire continent.
