Wendy Legatt, a Frenchwoman, is working to save the elephants of Laos, once known as the “Land of a Million Elephants” but now home to only 800, according to France 24.

Along the Mekong River, she founded the “Mekong Elephant Park,” a reserve where she buys mistreated elephants one by one from their owners. These animals, acquired through donations from former visitors turned patrons, are retired to a vast forest park where they now live freely.
