Dr Shauna Burke, associate professor of exercise and health psychology at the University of Leeds, has taken on an extraordinary challenge by climbing several peaks over 8,000 meters despite a diagnosis of stage 4 breast cancer.
Passionate about mountaineering, she had already reached the summit of Everest in 2005. After her diagnosis, she returned to Everest this year and now aims to conquer the remaining 13 mountains exceeding 8,000 meters.
For Dr Burke, the mountains represent more than just a backdrop: “When I am in the mountains, I feel at peace. I feel alive,” she shares. Facing an incurable illness, she refuses to let cancer define the limits of her life, exploring how exercise, resilience, and a commitment to living fully can influence quality of life.
